As a fresher, your career track record is like a clean slate. Thus, when you get your first job, it’s very important to make the right decisions to find success. Your theoretical knowledge doesn’t play a substantial role, and you must know certain tips and tricks to soaring high in your career. And in such situations, an experienced person can share some fruitful career tips for freshers.

Thus, from my eighteen years of experience in various domains, I would like to share some tips that can help a fresher kickstart career growth with the right approach. Throughout I got to gain knowledge of early-stage startups, investment management, brand communication, and crowdfunding.

So here are six career tips for freshers that can help you in starting your career on a brighter note.

1. A fresher must have an open mind and willingness to learn

Subject to one’s career objectives, there could be various considerations a fresher might take before applying for a job in any company. It could be a brand that he/she wants to work for, the work profile, or even the person with whom he/she wants to work with. But for most people, the first job is just a testing ground for them to see what they like and what they don’t.

Hence no matter whatever is the first job; the focus should be on being open-minded, willing to learn as much as possible, experimenting a little to bring your unique value to the organisation, and willing to learn from these experiences to choose your second job in a much better way.

2. As a fresher show that you have a positive attitude

In most cases an organisation may not have great expectations from a fresher; as they are expected to be in training mode (and in most cases, unlearning whatever they had learnt while pursuing their theoretical degrees). But there are some ways that you can still build good impressions, which includes demonstrating a willingness to quickly learn on the job from your mistakes, bringing fresh ideas & perspectives on board, and being flexible to absorb the ground realities.

3. Be honest while communicating via email

Being truthful help. I remember an instance a few years back when owing to certain operational issues, a client’s event had not gone as planned, but when I wrote back to them, confessing where we as an agency went wrong; not only did we retain the client but also made them as friends for life.

4. Master the art of interacting with people.

I guess this is the most important thing that one learns on a real job. How do you interact with your peers, customers, leaders in various situations can make or break your career. So be tactful in expressing yourself, and keep learning as you walk the journey.

5. Follow passion over money

Never forget your passion. Don’t work for money, work for your passion, work to leave a better world behind, work to lead others into becoming their better selves, work to enjoy life so that you don’t have to work anymore.

6. Listen, Adapt, and Inspire to become a good team leader

a. Listen. Listen not just to people in your coterie, but even to naysayers and understand their logic & thought processes.
b. Adapt. While you may have strong personal instincts and gut on a certain decision, be open to learning from markets/customers and be willing to adapt strategies. It’s no shame in accepting what could be a better way to do certain things than what you could have originally thought.
c. Inspire. A true leader may be forced to take tough stands multiple times, for the larger good of the organisation. Be ready to take these as well as be ready to take responsibility for consequences.
